Scientific publications

A huge amount of research is currently being done on the medicinal properties of the cannabis plant. Unfortunately, these studies are not always easily accessible. After all, some scientific databases are only visible after payment. At the bottom of this webpage we have some links to databases that give free access, so free of charge, to various scientific publications. Our personal choice goes to "ResearchGate", a very large database where numerous studies on cannabis are published, as well as those of the four scientists mentioned below.

Prof. dr. Raphael Mechoulam, Dr. Ethan Russo, Prof. dr. Manuel Guzman and Prof. dr. Roger Pertwee, are the most famous names in the research world concerning medicinal cannabis. Worldwide they are often asked to speak at international conferences or symposia on this subject.

Prof. Raphael Mechoulam

  • Organic Chemist
  • Professor of medicinal chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Research

  • Chemistry and pharmacology of cannabinoids
  • He and his research group succeeded in mapping the total synthesis of the main cannabinoids Δ 9 - tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabidiol, cannabigerol and various other cannabinoids.
  • Another study led to the isolation of the first described endocannabinoid anandamide which was isolated and characterized by two of its postdoctoral researchers, Lumír Ondřej Hanuš and William Devane.
  • Another endogenous cannabinoid, 2-AG, was soon discovered by Shimon Ben-Shabat, one of his PhD students.

Dr. Ethan Russo

  • Director of Research and Development at International Cannabis and Cannabinoids Institute Seattle

Specialisatie

  • Neurology
  • Pediatric Neurology
  • Cannabinoids
  • Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
  • Ethnobotany
  • Phytomedicine
  • Pharmaceutical Industry

Research

  • Cannabis Therapeutics and the Future Neurology
  • Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency

Prof. Manuel Guzman

  • Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Complutense University of Madrid,
  • Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Pharmacy,
  • Member of the Board of Directors of the International Association for Cannabinoid Medicines.

Research

  • Study of the mechanism of action and the therapeutic properties of cannabinoids, especially in the nervous system. This work has given rise to several publications in specialized international journals, as well as to various international patents on the possible therapeutic uses of cannabinoids as anticancer and neuroprotective drugs.
  • He regularly collaborates with scientific assessment bodies.

Prof. Roger Pertwee

  • Master of biochemistry
  • D. Phil. in pharmacology
  • D.Sc. in physiological sciences
  • He is now professor emeritus at the University of Aberdeen, where he is still actively involved in scientific research.

Research

  • Co-chairman of the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) Subcommittee on Cannabinoid Receptors, a co-ordinator of the British Pharmacological Society's Special Interest Group on Cannabinoids, a co-founder of the International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS), an invited scientific advisor on cannabinoid pharmacology / therapeutics to the Beckley Foundation, and a visiting professor at the University of Hertfordshire.
  • Focuses on the pharmacology of cannabinoids.
  • He is the author of countless review articles on cannabinoids and is often invited to speak about the pharmacology of cannabinoids at international conferences.
  • He is also interested in the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids.
  • He has also served as President of the ICRS (1997-1998 and 2007-2008), and as President of the International Association of Cannabinoid Medicines (IACM, 2005-2007), and is currently also ICRS International Secretary (1992-2018) and a member of the IACM Board of Directors.
  • Author of The Handbook of Cannabis
